Children at Sarisbury Junior School turned the clock back to the 1940s as they experienced life as a young evacuee during the Second World War.

All the Year Five children spent the day in 1940s dress as part of their project on the war – and staff joined in by wearing period outfits too.
The highlight of the day though was when they children re-enacted being sent away from the city on a train and then going through the lottery of being selected by host families in the countryside.
The children lined up while a mixture of school staff and parents selected them and then told them of some of the jobs and hardships they would face in the countryside – although at least they were away from where bombs were falling.
Some of the children at Sarisbury were selected by a farmer – head teacher Andy Stockton – while others went with a very strict shopkeeper, some with a housekeeper and more with a teacher.

Mr Stockton said the day had been a fantastic success for the children and everyone involved in organising it.
“It just brings learning to life for them,” said Mr Stockton. “They have put themselves into the shoes of children as they would have been when they were evacuated.
“They have experienced the day exactly as life would have been and that really helps them when they unpick their thoughts and feelings about what life was like in World War Two.
“Our kids have been brilliant as well – they have really thrown themselves into the day and all dressed up in period costumes to add to the realism.”
