Author Ali Sparkes gives an entertaining talk to pupils
Children piled into Brookfield School to meet Ali Sparkes who gave an entertaining talk to the literary enthusiasts.
There were around 180 pupils at the school, which included Year 6 students from Park Gate Primary School and Sarisbury Junior School.
Students were able to then get a signed copy of one of Ali’s books.
Neil Chance, the English and Media Studies teacher at Brookfield, said: “The event went very well – the students were really positive and enthusiastic and Ali’s talk was excellent.
“Ali captivated and inspired them to really push their creativity and skills, and the energy between year 6 and the older students was electric!
“For me, and Brookfield school, it was all about rewarding those able students, keen readers and aspiring young writers with an enrichment opportunity that tied into our literacy pledge.
“It was about making the possibilities of writing for a real audience engaging, authentic and inspirational.”
The school in Brook Lane has a literacy pledge, which hopes to create and develop literate young people who have a love of reading and a sophisticated awareness of the power of language.
The pledge is to enthuse and inspire children’s confidence by supporting and encouraging them through a range of reading and writing opportunities, equipping them with the skills to enjoy and appreciate the written word.
The pupils then took part in creative writing workshops generating story ideas with a Dickens theme, for the Year 6 children to take their ideas away and develop them into short stories for the Brookfield students to hear at later date.
