School children in Whiteley and Sarisbury Green will be learning a host of new words thanks to the Whiteley Rotary Club’s Dictionary 4 Life scheme.
The club has raised cash and received funding from Fareham Borough Council to provide 200 Year 6 pupils at Whiteley Primary and Sarisbury Junior schools with the dictionaries.
The Usborne dictionary project, which costs £1,400 in total and is now in its fourth year, aims to help educate the 11-year-old students before they head to secondary school.
Rotarians have raised £600 for the scheme, while the council has given £400 towards it. Hampshire County Council is also to give £400 for the books.
Pauline Kidd, treasurer for the rotarian group, said: “It’s an educational tool. Rotary wants to nurture the young and the old, and all those in between.
“We think if we help educate people we’re giving them a good standard for life.”
